A Tale Out of Luck, by Willie NelsonYes, the Willie Nelson. When I first picked up the softcover book, I assumed that it was Willie Nelson's autobiography. The author's photo shows classic Willie - a rusty cowboy outfit, a wooden table with a bottle of whiskey and a deck of cards, and a horse idling in the background. Very country, very Willie Nelson. But then I read the description and was shocked to realize that it's not his autobiography! Willie Nelson wrote a novel!
The premise of the novel is a typical Western: there have been some murders and Indians might be involved. There's the war hero Hank Tomlinson, his son Jay Blue, and his sidekick Skeeter. Hank is the richest man in the town of Luck. In fact, he founded the town of Luck. But not without making some enemies along the way. When it appears that the mysterious murders could be pinned on Hank, Jay Blue and Skeeter take matters into their own hands and set off to prove Hank's innocence. They stumble into trouble each step of the way, but with the help of a reclusive mustanger, they pull through. The main story is criss-crossed with subplots that add to the confusion and drama and serve to propel the novel forward.
The book is a typical Western and the finale is predictable. However, the entertaining characters and fast-moving storyline make A Tale Out of Luck a quick but fun read. Willie Nelson fans will certainly enjoy the novel! Maggie Marton
